Why he might be annoying:

    After winning his Senate seat as a Republican he proved disinterested in politics and a poor campaigner who was defeated for re-election by a Democrat who later joined the Republican party himself.
    The military didn't reveal his hidden message about being tortured until after the war fearing the North Vietnamese would retaliate against him and other prisoners.
    He didn't believe in the separation of church and state.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Between his Naval and Senate service, he spent forty years in the service of his country.
    He spent eight years as a POW, four in solitary confinement.
    His invitation to speak on the Fourth of July 2004 to the California legislature was canceled by Democrats who objected to his political and religious views.
    He was the first admiral to join the Senate.
    He established the Denton Program while in the Senate which has supplied over twenty million pounds of material goods to the poor since its inception.
