He was an alcoholic in charge of one of the World's largest nuclear arsenals.
He suffered from depression.
He destroyed the historic house where the last tsar and his family were executed (1977).
Mikhail Gorbachev fired him from the Politburo for criticizing the slow progress of Perestroika.
He disbanded the democratic parliament and gave himself more powers (1993).
He ordered Russian troops into Chechnya (1994).
He presided over the collapse of the Soviet economy.
In his last 18 months in power, he fired four prime ministers.

As a child, he blew off two fingers playing with a grenade.
He was a pro volleyball player.
He was married to the same woman since 1956.
He was always an enthusiastic reformer.
As a parliamentarian, he campaigned against state corruption.
He personally stood up for Gorbachev in the face of a coup by hard-line army elements (August 18, 1991).
In his resignation speech, he apologized to the nation for his mistakes (December 31, 1999).
