The Resume

    (September 28, 1975- )
    Born in Odessa, Ukraine
Won gold medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter backstroke and the 4x100 meter relay

Why he might be annoying:

At 13, he considered quitting swimming because of the difficulties of fitting training time around school, a job and learning English.
He had to take most of 2001 off after injuring his knee by falling off a treadmill.
He complained that chlorine caused most of his body hair to fall out.

Why he might not be annoying:

His family were Jewish refugees from the Soviet Union.
His first college coach said, 'He was that kid who worked harder than anyone else. The more I watched him, the more I thought, 'This kid's potential is unlimited.' '
Unlike a lot of US swimmers at the Sydney Olympics, he avoided showboating and trash-talking, commenting, 'You have to represent America with class and with style.'
He donated $100,000 to repair the pools at the Westside Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles where he had worked as a lifeguard and trained as a teen.
