The Resume

    (September 19, 1888-October 6, 1953)
    Born in Cincinnati, Ohio
Birth name is Clifford Porter Hall
Acted in 'The Petrified Forest,' 'The Thin Man,' 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,' 'Double Indemnity,' 'The Story of Louis Pasteur,' 'His Girl Friday,' and 'Sullivan's Travels'
Best known as Mr. Sawyer in the Christmas classic 'Miracle on 34th Street' (1947)

Why he might be annoying:

He made his film debut at age 43.
He was typecast as unsympathetic and incompetent buffoons.
He was a devout Christian and deacon of his church, but portrayed an atheist in the Bing Crosby movie 'Going My Way.'
He had memorable roles in some of the greatest movies ever made, but will only ever be remembered as the dick psychiatrist who gets beamed in the head by Edmund Gwenn in 'Miracle on 34th Street.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He started out with a 1926 touring production of 'The Great Gatsby.'
He regularly played pompous curmudgeons, but had a reputation as one of the most charitable people in Hollywood.
He was the namesake for a character in Russ Meyer's 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' cult classic.
He suffered a fatal heart attack during the filming of 'Return to Treasure Island,' which was released a year later.
His full-on dickishness, in 'Miracle,' is so convincing that it lends a credible threat to the Kris Kringle character which otherwise would have been absent (try not to get chills when he hisses 'are you going to leave?!')
