Best-known for the 10-volume novel ‘Jean-Christophe’ (1904-12) and the seven-volume ‘The Enchanted Soul’ (1922-33)
Published his plays in the collections ‘Theater of the Revolution’ (1904) and ‘The Tragedies of Faith’ (1913)
Won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1915)

Despite having a Jewish wife, he refused to take a stand on the Dreyfus Affair.
He was a vegetarian.
He considered Joseph Stalin the greatest man of his time.

He received the first music doctorate granted by the Sorbonne (1895).
He published a biography of Mahatma Gandhi that contributed to his reputation in Europe (1924).
He intervened with Stalin to get anarchist author Victor Serge released from a Soviet prison.
Herman Hesse dedicated the novel ‘Siddhartha’ to him.
He wrote, ‘I find war detestable but those who praise it without participating in it even more so.’
