Why he might be annoying:

He was twice Elizabeth Taylor's age when they married.
Asked if he had the formula for a successful marriage, he replied, ‘I haven't a bloody clue.'
During Taylor's fifth (and sixth) marriage to Richard Burton, he hung out as part of their entourage.
He said, ‘I went to Hollywood for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, married Elizabeth Taylor and watched my career turn to ashes.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Hedda Hopper tried to dissuade Taylor from marrying him by publicly insinuating that he was homosexual. He successfully sued for libel.
Taylor proposed to him, and dominated the planning of the wedding so thoroughly that Kitty Kelley observed, ‘She wore a dove grey suit. He wore a look of surprise.'
Asked how he planned to spend the honeymoon with Taylor, he quipped, ‘Together.'
He apparently learned the formula for a successful marriage: he was married to Margaret Leighton until her death.
