Why he might be annoying:

    He was cold and reclusive.
He attended Harvard but didn't receive a degree.
He didn't start writing until his thirties.
Stung by mixed reviews of ‘Harmonium,' he stopped publishing for 8 years.
    He disliked receiving fan mail.
His abstract, demanding style makes him more of a poet for critics than general readers.

Why he might not be annoying:

When unknown he was championed by George Santayana and Marianne Moore.
He was able to balance his writing with a business career.
He wrote much of his best work in old age.
Initially underestimated, he is now considered a key modern poet.
He stayed married to his wife despite problems between them.
    He admired Greta Garbo.
Stephen King refers frequently to Stevens' poem ‘The Emperor of Ice Cream' in ‘Salem's Lot (1975).'
