Why he might be annoying:

    He has been accused of being a Quebec separatist, since most of his filmworks are favored towards the sovereignty movement.
    In addition to his stance on Quebec independence, he was allegedly a member of the FLQ.
    Speculation became rampant of his beliefs after his wife's appointment as Governor General, after one of his films showed the couple having dinner with FLQ members, discussing a hiding place for weapons in their home.
    He often has contradicted himself about his stance on Quebec sovereignty.
    He allegedly objected to Queen Elizabeth staying at Rideau Hall, despite the fact the residence is the official residence of the Queen in Canada.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was born in Paris, during the liberation from the Nazis.
    He was a professor in philosophy and communications prior to pursuing a career in filmmaking.
    He left France in 1974 and became a Canadian citizen (1984).
    He, along with his second wife Michaelle Jean, adopted a daughter from her home country of Haiti (1999).
    Following his term of Viceregal Consort of Canada, he was named to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (2010).
