U.S. Congressman
    (June 21, 1916-June 29, 1986)
    Republican Representative from Indiana (1969-75)
    He was an extreme conservative.
In 1971, he was one of only twenty-three representatives to vote against the Federal Election Campaign Act, a major campaign finance reform bill.
He voted against the Equal Employment Opportunity Enforcement Act in 1971, which strengthened the enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

He was the only representative to vote against extending the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 in 1974, which was the first major disability civil rights bill.
He was loyal to Nixon even in the last week of his presidency, stating that he would be on the president's side 'even if he and I have to be taken out of this building and shot.'
He also stated regarding his defense of Nixon, 'Don't confuse me with the facts. I have a closed mind.'
His career died along with Nixon's, losing reelection in 1974.
He voted in favor of establishing the Spanish Speaking People's Commission in 1969, which was intended to help Hispanics get ahead after years of being treated as second-class citizens.
He was very anti-communist and sought to free the Russian people from communism as soon as possible.
He opposed busing, which eventually even attracted the criticism of black liberals.
He opposed Nixon's price and wage controls, which would turn out to be economically disastrous.
He stood up for what he believed in, even if he was alone.
