Religious Figure

The Resume

    (circa 1030-October 6, 1101)
    Born in Colgne, Germany
    Catholic priest and saint
Founder of the Carthusian religious order of monks
Patron saint of Calabria (a region of southern Italy) and one of the patron saints of Germany
In addition to being famous for founding the Carthusians, he was known and is remembered for his learning and sanctity
Strongly supported the Catholic Church's teaching regarding the Mystery of the Trinity and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist

Why he might be annoying:

Although he wanted to be a monk or hermit he didn't actually become one until he was fifty.
He spent much of his time away from the monasteries he founded to advise the Pope in Rome in a role that was and is still clouded in extreme mystery.
He turned down appointments to bishop at least twice.
One of the monasteries he founded lasted less than a century.
    He was never formally canonized.
Due to his own and his order's extreme humility, he is largely forgotten today even by devout Catholics.

Why he might not be annoying:

In art he is usually shown with or holding a skull.
He taught high school for almost twenty years and one of his pupils later became Pope Urban II.
He baptized Roger II, the future King of Sicily.
He founded the Carthusians, one of the oldest and most respected orders of monks in the Catholic Church.
In addition to his learning, he was known for his"...great spirit of prayer, extreme mortification, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary."
Over two hundred books in at least seven languages have been written about him and the Carthusian order.
When he participated in the Church's investigation into his corrupt and reportedly violent bishop, his and his friends and co-workers and their relatives had their houses torn down by and worldly goods seized by the bishop who absconded with them to the Holy Roman Empire and its anti-papal emperor.
He was a skilled linguist who knew (at least) French, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek.
