    Born in Kazan, Russian Federation

His first name was also spelled Fyodor, while his last name was also spelled Shalyapin.
When he portrayed Basilio in 'The Barber of Seville' at the Metropolitan Opera House, he injected 'realism' into his performance by picking his nose and wiping his fingers on his costume.
He hogged the spotlight on stage, with Rosa Ponselle commenting, 'If a colleague gave him an inch, he would steal the entire scene.'
The directors of the Metropolitan Opera translated only his negative reviews to keep him from demanding a raise.
The Soviet government declared him an 'enemy of the revolution' and seized his property.
Arturo Toscanini said he was the greatest operatic talent he had ever worked with.
