    (October 5, 1934-September 21, 2002)
    Born in Rochester, New York
With his cousin, Kenneth Bianchi, was responsible for the Hillside Strangler killings
Raped, tortured and murdered ten girls and women between the ages of 12 and 28 in the area near Los Angeles (October 1977-February 1978)
Convicted on nine counts of first degree murder (November, 1983)
    Sentenced to life in prison
Even at 14, he boasted to friends about raping girls.
He abused his wives and children and particularly liked to have his children watch when he beat their mother.
He claimed that he raped his 14-year-old stepdaughter, then handed her over to his sons.
Before moving on to murder, he and Bianchi kidnapped two women, held them prisoner and forced them into prostitution.
He called Caryl Chessman his role model, and like Chessman, he impersonated a cop to abduct women.
The original prosecutor, Roger Kelly, thought the case was unwinnable and asked that all charges against Buono be dismissed.
His murder trial set a record as the longest criminal case in American legal history.
He and Bianchi let one potential victim go without harm after discovering that she was Peter Lorre's daughter.
Judge Ronald George denied the order to dismiss and had the case reassigned from the Los Angeles District Attorney's office to the state Attorney General.
Proving Kelly wrong, the new prosecutors got convictions on nine of the ten murder charges.
Although he was able to get married in prison (1986), the state declared that he would not be allowed conjugal visits because of the nature of his crimes.
