    Birth name was William Philip Gramm
    Representative (1979-85) and Senator (1985-2002) from Texas
    Co-chaired John McCain's presidential campaign (2007-July 18, 2008)

Why he might be annoying:

    He supported the Vietnam War, but received five student deferments to avoid serving.
    He was a Democrat turned Republican.
    He responded to suggestions that proposed changes to Social Security would harm people over age 80 by saying, 'Most people don't have the luxury of living to be 80 years old, so it's hard for me to feel sorry for them.'
    He drafted an exemption to the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 for the benefit of Enron.
    At the time, his wife was a member of the Enron board of directors.
    In response to concerns about the US economy,he declared 'We have sort of become a nation of whiners.' (July 9, 2008)

Why he might not be annoying:

    He taught economics at Texas A&M University (1967-78).
    He frequently called for reductions in taxes and government spending.
    He co-authored the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Balanced Budget Act (1985).
    According to McCain, Gramm has 'a rare intellect that grasps complex issues and explains them to others in plain language.'
