Why he might be annoying:

He was the first man to resign as Vice President to serve in the U.S. Congress.
He was known to be stubborn.
He looks really pissed off in most of his pictures.
He was a member of the 'war hawks' coalition which brought America to war with Great Britain in 1812.
He was against the abolitionist movement and attempted to censor their press frequently.

Why he might not be annoying:

He presided over the Senate during what is considered to be by scholars as 'the Golden Age of the Senate.'
He was largely self-taught, and had to go manage the family farm after the death of his father.
He had a sense of moral rectitude and did not like the 'corrupt bargain' John Quincy Adams had concocted to secure the presidency.
He reorganized the U.S. military serving during his term as Secretary of War under James Monroe.
He was honored as one of the top five senators of all time by United States Senators (1957).
