    Born in Hessen, Germany
    German Army Officer in World War II
    Helped save several Jews and Poles in Nazi occupied Poland

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a registered Nazi.
    He was involved with the building of POW camps.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is one of the few Nazis who history considers a hero for his efforts to save Polish Jews, including composer Wlasyslaw Szpliman.
    He was captured by the Russians, and tortured to death even as several Poles and Jews petitioned for his release.
    In 2009, Israeli diplomats presented his son with the Righteous Among the Nations award.
    He befriended a number of Polish people and made an effort to learn their language.
    He went to Mass and received Holy Communion even though this was against the official Nazi decree.
    He was sentenced to 25 years hard labor for war crimes simply because of his position in the German military.
    He eventually became disillusioned with the Nazi party after seeing the treatment of Jews.
