Led an early Antarctic expedition (1900-1902)
Sailed to the South Pole on the ‘Terra Nova’ (Circa January 17, 1912), only to find Norwegian explorers had been there first
Froze to death coming back
Known as ‘Scott of the Antarctic’

Why he might be annoying:

He attempted to claim the South Pole for Great Britain, but Norway beat him by a month.
His entire crew froze or starved to death on the way back.
Some suggest his team died because his expedition was poorly planned.
Many of the crew members he brought along lacked experience.
One critic called him an example of ‘that strange type of British hero, one whose incompetence is romanticized into fame.’

Why he might not be annoying:

When he finally reached the South Pole, the Norwegians had left him a bitchy note rubbing it in his face that they beat him.
He kept a diary account of his journey until the very end.
Unlike his Norwegian rivals, he gathered detailed scientific data that would be useful to future explorers.
He became a hero to the British for his courage and ‘stiff upper lip’ in the face of failure and death.
