    (August 7, 1883-November 17, 1934)
    Born in Wurzen, Germany
    Birth name was Hans Botticher
    German novelist, poet, and painter
Wrote 'Gedichte' (1910), 'Ein Jeder Lebt's Novellen' (1913), 'Kuttel Daddeldu' (1923), 'Allerdings' (1928), 'Mein Leben bis zum Kriege' (1931), and 'Gedichte dreier Jahre' (1932)
Banned by the Nazi government as a 'degenerate artist' (1933)
He dropped out of secondary school.
His pen name was a dialect expression for 'Grass Snake' in German.
His lyrics were known for being extremely dark, grotesque and bitingly sarcastic.
The majority of his paintings have either been lost or stolen.
He would sometimes smash chairs during his stage shows.
He got a tattoo to impress a Samoan woman he saw in an ethnological exhibition.
He volunteered to serve in the German Navy during World War One.
He was a seaman who started out as a cabin boy on steamers/vessels.
He was a key figure in the artistic flowering of the Weimar Renaissance in the late 1920s.
He later worked variously as a librarian, tourist guide and shop-window decorator.
He was a triple threat: a visual artist, a cabaret performer, and a gifted poet.
His most popular creation was the anarchic sailor Kuddel Daddeldu, famous for his drunken antics and disdain for authority.
The Nazis forbade him from performing publicly and orchestrated public burnings of his books.
He was cajoled by a colleague into going to meet with a propaganda minister to plead for the ban on his work to be lifted, but when he arrived at the office he yelled 'no' before the officer could even stand up, and stormed out. He would die sick and penniless only a year later.
