The Resume

    (June 8, 1955- )
Born in London, England, United Kingdom
    Based in Cambridge, Massachussetts
Co-creator of the Internet (first website launched August 6, 1991)
1994 World Wide Web Hall of Fame member
1995 Kilby Foundation’s Young Innovator of the Year award
Founding director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C, 1994) and World Wide Web Foundation (September 2008)
Recipient of Finland’s first Millennium Technology Prize (2004, inventing the Net)
    Order of Merit (June 2007)

Why he might be annoying:

    His nickname is ‘TimBL.’
He left the Church of England in his teens, just after his rite of initiation.
He initially considered the forward slashes (‘//’) in a Net address to be an embarrassment (‘it seemed like a good idea at the time’).
In naming him one of their 100 People of the Century, Time Magazine credited him as the sole inventor of the Web (the Net’s single most important component).
He felt strange about being knighted for his work by Elizabeth II (2004).

Why he might not be annoying:

He made the first proposal for the Internet in March 1989.
He assisted in the definitive Christmas Day technological evolution (1990): the first successful communication between a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) client and server on the Web.
Mercifully, he abandoned such proposed names as TIM (The Information Mine) and MOI (Mine of Information) because he considered them ‘un peu egoiste’ and Information Mesh for sounding too much like ‘mess.’
Nor, by giving away proprietary rights to the Web, did he care much to profit personally by his creation.
