As a waiter at Dinty Moore's Tavern in the Bronx, he wore a uniform with lots of buttons. Topped with his red hair, he became known as Red Buttons.
He came up with the popular catch-phrase 'Strange things are happening.'

He began working as a comedian at burlesque shows when he was 16.
His popular variety series only lasted 3 years.
