Why he might be annoying:

Slate.com described his most famous book 'Tobacco Road' as 'a greasy hairball of a novel.'
Many Southerners feel his fiction stereotypes them as backward, oversexed, brutal degenerates.
His sex scenes typically open this way: 'Ellie May's acting like your old hound used to when he got the itch....Look at her scrap her bottom on the sand.'
The schlocky paperback versions of his novels cost him a lot of credibility with serious reviewers.
Margaret Mitchell accused him of selling out for 'Yankee dollars.'
He was married four times.
Much of his later work remains unpublished.

Why he might not be annoying:

Accused of caricaturing the South, he was in fact committed to fighting social injustice.
The New York Literary Society had him arrested for obscenity when 'God's Little Acre' was published.
Fans and supporters included William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson, Saul Bellow and H.L. Mencken.
He was a foreign correspondent in the Ukraine during World War 2.
He married well known Life magazine photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White.
His books were among the first published as mass market paperbacks.
He was one of the most banned--and read--authors of the twentieth century.
