    Appeared on stage in 'Naughty Marietta' and 'South Pacific'
    She was reportedly fired from MGM for turning down 'National Velvet' because there was no singing in it.
    After suddenly walking out on her husband, she had trouble supporting her two sons, who often lived with her in squalor.
    She suffered from alcoholism and mental illness for decades.
    At times she lived in her car and in a tiny apartment with a doting fan.
    She could reach B above high C.
    At age five, she helped support her family by earning $5 a week performing on radio.
    She quit the movies to raise her younger sisters and take them away from their alcoholic mother.
    She performed at the White House Press Photographer's Ball for President Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt (1946).
    She said, 'I was never really ambitious. At least not in the cutthroat way that's required to succeed.'
