Appeared in the films 'Handy Andy' (1934), 'A Star Is Born' (1937), 'The Bride Wore Boots' (1946), 'The Story of Ruth' (1960) and 'The Sound of Music' (1965)
Portrayed Mama Marta Hansen in the TV series 'Mama' (1949-56)

Why she might be annoying:

Her explanation for why her movie career never really took off: 'I was not attractive in the way one was supposed to be out there, and I think that, and the fact that I could act, confused them terribly.'
Despite a five decade long career, she is remembered almost solely for portraying the Mother Abbess in 'The Sound of Music.'
In 'The Sound of Music,' her voice had to be overdubbed by Margery McKay on the song 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain.'

She was a member of the Algonquin Round Table of wits.
During a discussion of Shakespeare, Alexander Woollcott said, 'I don't think you'd make a very good Lady Macbeth, do you, Peggy?' She replied, 'No, Aleck, but you would.'
She sang with the USO during World War II.
She was nominated for an Emmy as Best Actress in a Drama for 'Mama' (1957) and an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for 'The Sound of Music.'
