Most of his later films were critical and commercial failures.

He was nearly blacklisted during the 1950s Communist Scare.
He was unafraid to make films on controversial issues, creating films on racism, Nazi war crimes, and the evolution debate.
He was nominated for a Best Director Oscar three times but never won.
Despite being an independent filmmaker, he was able to attract big stars to his films and make box office successes.
He produced/directed some of the greatest films of all time.
