    Canonized by the Russian Orthodox church (2006)

Why he might be annoying:

    He accepted military aid from the notorious Vlad the Impaler.
    He overthrew Radu the Handsome of Wallachia, then married Radu’s daughter.
    He complained about not getting enough support from the rest of Europe in his battles against the Ottoman Turks.
    He eventually paid the Ottomans an annual tribute to keep Moldavia free.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He barely escaped with his life when his father was assassinated at the wedding of one of his nobles.
    He kept Moldavia independent, fighting off invasions from Hungary, Poland, the Tartars and the Ottomans.
    Pope Sixtus IV called him ‘a true champion of the Christian faith.’
    In a 2006 poll, he was voted the greatest Romanian of all time.
