He called his political opponents heretics.
Two years after Parliament was set up, he eliminated it and began messing up elections in favor of his supporters (1965).
He subsequently harassed dissidents and democracy activists in Morocco, creating a time period known as ‘Years of Lead’ (1960s-1980s).
His annexation of Western Sahara was followed by armed uprisings by the Polisario and criticism of human rights abuses abroad (1975).

At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving monarch in the Arab world.
He was fluent in English, French, and Spanish as well as Arabic.
He and his father negotiated for Moroccan independence.
He helped with the negotiations between Israel and the Arab world due to the large Moroccan Jewish community in Israel.
He allied with the West during the Cold War.
He survived two assassination attempts in the form of coup d’états, the first was sponsored by Libya and the second was perpetrated by the defense minister (July 9, 1971 and August 16, 1972).
He provided Equatoguinean president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasago with a firing squad to execute the brutal dictator Francisco Macías Nguema (1979).
During the later years of his reign, his rule became milder and Morocco eventually became a constitutional monarchy (1990s).
