    Housed 80,000 prisoners
    Savage murderers and petty thieves were mixed together.
    Due to French anti-semitism, Alfred Dreyfus was exiled to Devil's Island.
    More than 60% of the prisoners sentence to the penal colony died there due to disease, mistreatment and failed escaped attempts.
    Although Devil's Island was one specific island, the entire penal colony was known as Devil's Island.
    It removed criminals from France.
    The name has become synonymous with man's evil treatment of other men.
    If a prisoner escaped to Dutch Guiana, he was given freedom, however a number of those prisoners took advantage of the Dutch generosity by committing crimes there. Eventually, Dutch Guinea reversed their decision and return all but prisoners of German extraction to Devil's Island.
