The Resume

    (December 23, 1805-June 27, 1844)
Mormons Church revealed to him by at age 14 (1820)
Smith prayed to God asking which church to join and both God and Jesus appeared to him and told him there is no correct church on Earth and he was appointed to start the correct one (see picture)

Why he might be annoying:

He claims he was constantly being 'severely persecuted' for revealing that he had seen God and Jesus together, but he never explains how he was persecuted.
Eight years after he was told by God himself to join no church, Smith applied for membership in a local Methodist church (other members of his family had joined the Presbyterians - 1828).
    He was an alcoholic.
He was a con man, because he earned a living by charging local farmers to help locate buried treasure.
He found treasure using folk magic and 'seer stones.'
He was tried on a charge of money digging (1826).
He had another heavenly visitation, in which the angel, Moroni told him, of a sacred history written by ancient Hebrews in America (1823).
This history was engraved in an Egyptian dialect on tablets of gold and buried in a nearby hill.
It was the history of the ancient peoples of America and he would be the instrument to bring this knowledge to the world.
He obtained those gold plates from the angel (1827).
He was able to translate them into English using the spirit of God and the sacred instrument accompanying the plates called the 'Urim and Thummim.'
The translation was published as The Book of Mormon (1830).
It took God seven days (one day for rest) to create everything, but it took God, Smith and those tools three years to translate these plates.
Smith announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States, set up a secret government, and secretly had himself crowned 'King of the Kingdom of God.'
Smith was arrested and jailed for having ordered the destruction of a Nauvoo newspaper which exposed his secret sexual liaisons.
While in jail he got involved in a gun battle and was shot to death, at 38 (June 27, 1844).
Mormons say that Smith was a martyr and claim that a mob attacked his jail cell to persecute him.
Joseph Smith claimed to be a 'prophet.'
He frequently prophesied future events 'by the power of God.'
Many of these prophecies are recorded in the LDS scripture Doctrine and Covenants.
Almost none have been fulfilled, and many could never be fulfilled.
The deeds needed to be done by the persons named were never done and those persons are now dead.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He started a successful religion.
