Head coach at Virginia Military Institute (1969-72), Rice University (1977-81), Portland Trail Blazers (1986-89) and the Los Angeles Clippers (1990-92)
NBA Coach of the Year (1987)

His Trail Blazer teams recorded a 2-6 record in both their playoff appearances combined.
His head coaching stints lasted no longer then three years.
He was best remembered for falling off his chair during his introductory press conference with the Trail Blazers.
He was fired by the Trail Blazers after a player revolt in the locker room.

He guided the Trail Blazers to two second place finishes during his first two seasons at the helm.
He wasn't afraid to hold his players accountable if needed.
He was the first head coach in the history of the Trail Blazers franchise to earn Coach of the Year honors.
He was a major contributor to the Ohio athletic department in the years following his graduation from the school.
