    It shared its capital city status with Wheeling before the residents chose Charleston as the permanent capital.
    The Battle of Charleston took place here (1862).
    The first major shopping mall complex east of the Mississippi River was built here.
    Notable residents are Kathy Mattea, Jennifer Garner, Randy Moss and John Kruk.
    It has an extremely warm climate.
    It is home to the first synthetic rubber plant, which opened during World War II.
    It has a lot of breathtaking scenery.
