Why he might be annoying:

He was bitter and pessimistic.
His paintings are dark and often horrifying.
They feature cannibalism, witchcraft, mutilations and massacres.
When hired to paint portraits, he would deliberately make his subjects look awful.
He was accused of simply imitating the style of Velázquez.
Little is known about his early life.
