    (1946- )
    Born in Ndora, Rwanda
Rwandan Minister for Family Welfare and the Advancement of Women (1992-94)
Organized mass killings of Tutsis by Hutus in her home province of Butare (1994)
Fled the country when the Rwandan Patriotic Front took power (July, 1994)
    Arrested in Nairobi, Kenya (1997)
Tried by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (2001-11)
Found guilty of seven charges, including genocide and inciting rape, and sentenced to life imprisonment (June 24, 2011)
Her rise in the Rwandan government had a lot to do with her high school friendship with President Juvenal Habyariamana's wife, Agathe.
She lured Tutsis to a trap by spreading reports that the Red Cross had set up a refuge in Butare's stadium, then unleashed the Hutu militia on them.
She told militia men, 'Before you kill the women, you need to rape them.'
When she ordered the militia to burn a group of women alive only to be told they had no fuel, she provided cans of gasoline from her car.
She called Tutsi women 'cockroaches' and 'dirt.'
She encouraged her son Arsene Shalom to kill and rape.
The judges at her trial concluded, 'The evidence presented by these survivors is among the worst encountered by this Chamber. It paints a clear picture of unfathomable depravity and sadism.'
She made her government title bitterly ironic.
She was a social worker who provided information on child care and AIDS prevention.
When she first fled Rwanda, she was the leader of social services at a Hutu refugee camp in the Congo, where her duties included reuniting separated parents and children.
She broke the glass ceiling for women in the field of genocide.
