Although being born and raised in Canada, many people think he was born in the United States.
In the early 1960's, he was in a band with Rick James while James was AWOL from the US Army.

He's one of the most respected and prolific musicians of all time.
His songs have been covered by such artists as Oasis, Phish, Type O Negative, Pearl Jam, Three Dog Night, Radiohead and Annie Lennox.
He's turned down every commercial endorsement he has ever been offered and wrote about it in his song, 'This Note's For You.'
Turned down 1 million dollars to appear at Woodstock '94, on the basis of its over-emphasis on commercialism.
His song 'Four Dead in Ohio' is about the tragedy that happened when Vietnam war protestors were shot and killed by the Ohio State National Guard.
During his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech, he thanked Kurt Cobain for renewing his dedication to making music.
He was introduced that night by Eddie Vedder.
He performed John Lennon's 'Imagine' during the America: A Tribute to Heroes concert.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for his song 'Philadelphia.'
