    (May 8, 1893-September 2, 1967)
    Born in Brookline, Massachusetts
    Won the US Open (1913)
Twice won the US Amateur Championship (1914,1931)
Inaugural member of the World Golf Hall of Fame (1974)
    Last name pronounced 'wee-met'

Growing up, he and his brother would sneak onto the course of the Brookline Country Club to play after hours.
He had to be talked into playing the 1913 US Open because he was reluctant to go up against professionals.
His caddy at the 1913 Open, ten-year-old Eddie Lowery, was playing hooky from school.
He was stripped of his amateur status by the United States Golf Association for two years (1916-18) when the USGA ruled that he was using his golf celebrity to increase sales at his sporting goods store.
He was portrayed by Shia LaBeouf in the film 'The Greatest Game Ever Played.'
He taught himself golf by observing the players while caddying at the Brookline Country Club.
His 1913 US Open victory in a playoff over British pros Harry Vardon and Ted Ray was credited with bringing golf into the mainstream of American sports.
In the decade after his US Open victory, the number of golfers in America increased from 300,000 to over 2 million.
He put on several golfing exhibitions as fundraisers for the Red Cross during World War I.
He was the first recipient of the USGA's Bob Jones Award for distinguished sportsmanship (1955).
