Why he might be annoying:

He was a child prodigy whose golfing skills were featured in MovieTone News when he was three.
He was nicknamed Rossie.
He said, 'My temper was not exactly the greatest. I don't think I hurt anyone else, but I hurt myself.'
His signature phrase as a commentator was 'He hasn't got a chance' - often delivered before a player made a miraculous shot.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an outstanding baseball player at Stanford and almost chose baseball over golf for a career.
He was a pioneer of reporting from the fairways.
He convinced ABC to hire Judy Rankin as the first female golf commentator to cover men's events.
He noted about his catchphrase, 'If you wait until the shot has already been made, then you say something, well everybody knows that. You don't have to be a genius to do that. I thought it might be good to give the viewer a picture of the shot from another player's eyes and how he felt about it.'
