The Resume

    (December 1, 1924-March 17, 1938)
    Ceased operations (May 13, 1939)
    Stanley Cup Champs (1926, 1935)
Hall of Famers: Clint Benedict, Toe Blake, George Boucher, Punch Broadbent, Lionel Conacher, Alex Connell, Red Dutton, Tommy Gorman, Reg Noble, Babe Siebert, Hooley Smith, Nels Stewart,
    Played at the Montreal Forum

Why they might be annoying:

They were named Maroons because of their team color.
Opponents probably nicknamed them the 'Montreal Morons.'
They used eight different coaches in just 14 seasons.
Just as they won the Stanley Cup in their second season of existence, they lost the Cup finals to the Rangers, in their second season (1928).
Most of their games with the Canadiens turned into brawls, with fights in the stands.
Talk about fighting, their first team captain was named Punch (Broadbent).
Hooley Smith chewed tobacco and had a reputation of spitting in the faces of the opposing goalie.
They lost the longest NHL game, it was scoreless until the 116½ minute of overtime when the Red Wings scored (March 24, 1936).
Due to the on going depression, the NHL governors felt the Maroons (who had the league's worst attendance) should fold, so the Montreal Canadiens would draw better.
The Maroons proposed to move to St. Louis, but the NHL governors refused due to high travel costs.

Why they might not be annoying:

They were organized to act as a replacement for the Montreal Wanderers that folded in 1918.
They were the first team to play at the Montreal Forum.
Since the Montreal Canadian fans were primarily French, they were set up for the English fans.
They had to give the Montreal Canadiens $10,000 so they could compete in Montreal.
They never had a worse season than their first 9-19-2 for 20 points.
Incredibly, they won the Stanley Cup in their second season.
Clint Benedict became the first goalie to wear face gear (protecting his broken nose) (February 20, 1930).
They had a strong rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens.
Other than their first and last season, they only missed playoffs one other time (1929).
Nels Stewart, the MVP, scored all 10 Maroons goals in the 1926 Stanley Cup finals.
Goaltender Clint Benedict won 3 games as shutouts in the 1926 Stanley Cup finals.
After beating the WCHL champs Victoria, the WCHL folded and only NHL teams competed for the Stanley Cup (1926).
