    In the early part of his career, he worked regular jobs to support himself during the day and performing clubs at night.
    He wrote most of his own songs, which were often classified as 'thinking man's country'.
    He was the only country music artist to appear on 'Soul Train.'
    His 18 #1 singles in the 1980's, ranked him in the top three country artists, behind Ronnie Milsap and Alabama.
    His duet 'Brotherly Love' was a posthumous release for Keith Whitley.
