U.S. Congressman
    (September 10, 1949-August 20, 2008)
    Born in Cleveland, Ohio
    Represented Ohio’s 11th District (1998-2008)
Served as Cuyahoga County Prosecutor (1991-99)
Chair of the House Ethics Committee (2007-08)
    Her middle name inspired jokes.
She was named House Ethics Committee chair despite ranking fourth among House members in accepting lobbyist-sponsored trips.
She had a heated confrontation with CBS' Sharryl Attkisson after being questioned about a $2 million earmark benefiting the paint company Sherwin Williams.
She endorsed Hillary Clinton for President in 2008, despite her district overwhelmingly supporting Barack Obama for the nomination.
She was criticized, shortly after photos surfaced of Obama in a turban and Arabic garb, for saying: 'I have no shame or no problem with people looking at [him] in his native clothing, in the clothing of his country' (comments some have construed as early support for birtherism).
She vocally opposed the Iraq War.
She was the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress from Ohio.
She led the congressional objection to certifying election results from her state during the 2004 election, citing irregularities.
She passed the Count Every Vote Act, the year following the election, to combat voter suppression in urban areas.
She made a memorable appearance in a skit on The Colbert Report, as 'Judge Tubbs' (the sketch was reran on the show following her death).
She was attacked as a 'hanky head' and a 'Mammy', within the black community, for choosing to support Clinton over Obama.
The details of her death are extremely sketchy (found unconscious in her car from an apparent cerebral hemorrhage, less than a week before she was to serve as a superdelegate at the 2008 DNC).
