    Served in the Swedish Senate (1936-38,1942-47)
    Swedish Minister of Trade (1945-47)
    Executive Secretary for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (1947-57)
    Wrote 'Crisis in the Population Question' (1934), 'An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy' (1944), 'Beyond the Welfare State' (1958) and 'Asian Drama: An Inquiry into the Poverty of Nations' (1968)
    Co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics (1974)
    Wife Alva Myrdal received the Nobel Peace Prize (1982)

Why he might be annoying:

    He advocated eugenics and compulsory sterilization.
    He was a chain smoker who bragged about surviving a heart attack that would have killed most people (1972)
    He and conservative economist Friedrich Hayek were mutually annoyed at being named co-winners of the Nobel Prize.
    He later said he should have rejected the Prize and urged that it be abolished because economics were a 'soft science.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He so impressed his professors at Stockholm University that he was named to the faculty upon graduation.
    'An American Dilemma' influenced the Supreme Court decision to outlaw segregation in public schools in Brown v Board of Education (1954).
    He wrote, 'No social utopia can compete with the promise of the American Constitution and the American creed which it embraces.'
