    Born in Shreveport, Louisiana
    Four-time Olympic gold medalist
    She finished fifth in the 100 meter Track and Field event of the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.
    Despite having high prospects, she was unable to compete in the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics because of a US-led boycott.
    While competing in the 100 meter dash in the inaugural 1983 World Championships in Athletics, she pulled a hamstring and fell.
    She won two gold medals during the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
    She also won three consecutive 4x100 meter relay races between 1984 and 1992.
    She was ranked number one in the world by 'Track & Field News' over 100 meters in 1979 and 1981, and over 200 meters in 1981.
    That same magazine also named her 'Athlete of the Year' in 1981 and 1984.
    In 1997, she was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
