    Defeated by Costa Rican troops and American mercenaries supported by Cornelius Vanderbilt at Rivas (April 11, 1856)
    Surrendered to Charles Henry Davis, Commander of the US Navy (May 1, 1857)
    Executed by Honduran firing squad in Trujillo, Honduras

Why he might be annoying:

    He supported slavery and sympathized with the Southern United States’ demands to expand it.
    He unsuccessfully tried to seize Mexico’s Baja California province and turn it into a slave state (October 15, 1853).
    He was put on trial for conducting an illegal war against Mexico after the Republic of Sonora, which he created, was abandoned.
    He worked as both a doctor and as a lawyer simultaneously.
    He took over Nicaragua by force technically.
    He staged a fake election to become President of Nicaragua.
    He betrayed Cornelius Vanderbilt, who supported his takeover of Nicaragua, by trying to take over his company.
    As Nicaraguan president, he annulled Nicaragua’s decree that outlawed slavery since 1824.
    He tried to invade Nicaragua’s neighbors for the purpose of turning all of Latin America into a slaveholding empire.
    He’s more well known in Central America than in the United States.
    He studied law after he graduated from the University of Nashville.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was called the ‘gray-eyed man of destiny’ by his fellow Southerners.
    His military defeat at Rivas during April 11 is a national holiday in Costa Rica.
    His maternal grandfather, Lipscomb Norvell, fought in the Revolutionary War.
    He graduated from the University of Nashville at the age fourteen.
    When he returned to Central America, the British, who controlled the Mosquito Coast that consisted of Nicaragua’s eastern coast and Honduras’ southeastern coast, handed him to Honduran authorities, who executed him.
