    Born in Indianapolis, Indiana
    Jazz trumpeter
Recorded the albums 'Open Sesame' (1960), 'Hub Cap' (1961), 'Ready for Freddie' (1961), 'Hub Tones' (1962), 'Backlash' (1966), 'A Soul Experiment' (1969), 'Red Clay' (1970), 'Straight Life' (1970), 'Sky Dive' (1973), 'High Energy' (1974), 'Liquid Love' (1975), 'Windjammer' (1976), 'Super Blue' (1978), 'Times Are Changin' (1989) and 'MMTC: Monk, Miles, Trane and Cannon' (1994)
Also recorded with Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman
Critics dismissed many of his 70s albums for their commercialism.
He missed several gigs from drinking and partying with 'the rock crowd.'
His playing was adversely affected after he split his lip as a result of getting 'carried away' playing high notes and then developed an infection when he ignored the injury (1992).
He trained with the Indianapolis Symphony.
He won a 'New Star' award from Downbeat magazine, a Grammy and a NEA Jazz Masters award.
Wynton Marsalis said, 'He influenced all the trumpet players who came after him.'
