Military Personnel
    (circa 236 BC-circa 183 BC)
    Born in Rome, Italy
Birth name was Publius Cornelius Scipio
    Roman general
Given the title Africanus after defeating Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in the Second Punic War (October 9, 202 BC)
His fondness for Greek culture was opposed by conservative Romans.
His lenient treatment of Carthage after the Battle of Zama pissed off Cato the Elder and his allies.
It also eventually allowed Carthage to rebound for a third Punic War.
He betrothed his five-year-old daughter to a political ally two decades her senior.
He died exiled at his country estate and was buried in a tomb with the inscription 'Ungrateful Fatherland, you will not even have my bones.'
After the deaths in battle of his father and uncle, he volunteered to lead the Roman army in Spain at a time when other commanders considered the position a death sentence.
He never lost a battle as commander.
His lenient treatment of prisoners in Spain enabled him to portray the Romans as liberators rather than conquerors.
He refused the titles of dictator and consul for life after his victories in Africa.
