    (March 27, 1785-June 8, 1795)
    Born in Versailles, France
    Baptized Louis-Charles
Son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
    Nephew of Louis XVIII
Dauphin or heir apparent to the French throne after the death of his older brother Louis Joseph
Forced with his family by revolutionaries to leave Versailles and live in seclusion at Tuileries Palace in Paris (1789)
Captured along with his family when they attempted to flee Paris (1791)
Imprisoned a few months later in the Temple, a medieval fortress, until his death from tuberculosis
Despite his royal title, he was never crowned.
Royalists insisted he was the king of France after his father was executed.
Stories of his neglect while imprisoned may have been exaggerated.
Egged on by his captors, he accused his mother and aunt of sexual abuse, probably falsely.
As with Anastasia Romanov, rumors he had escaped persisted for years, with many fraudsters claiming to be the ‘Lost Dauphin.’
He appears in the schlocky film ‘Killer Tomatoes Eat France’ (1991).
His parents were beheaded when he was eight.
While at the Temple he was put in the care of a cobbler’s family, who may have abused him.
He was possibly kept in a filthy, isolated cell for six months.
    Eventually he stopped speaking.
He was buried in an unmarked grave, unmourned by his surviving family.
DNA testing of his heart in 2000 confirmed his identity.
