Why he might be annoying:

As a child, he was ordained as a minister.
He smoked.
After his discharge from the military, he joined an outlaw motorcycle gang.

Why he might not be annoying:

His unit took part in the Second Battle of Fallujah, encountering heavy fire (November 2004).
After his photo gained worldwide attention, he was offered the chance to return to the United States, but refused, not wanting to leave behind his unit.
He suffered Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including nightmares, blackouts, depression, violent outbursts, suicidal thoughts and depression.
He represented the mental turmoil tackled by soldiers fighting the Second Iraq War.
