Why he might be annoying:

He turned down an appointment to West Point to join an acting stock company.
He began appearing in movies only after he was wiped out financially bringing a play he wrote to Broadway, where it flopped, lasting only 16 performances (1909).
Alfred Hitchcock offered him the part of the villian in 'Saboteur' (1942), but his wife convinced him to turn it down.
His smoking contributed to his death from lung cancer and emphysema.
Some sources erroneously report that he died after being bitten by a black widow spider.

Why he might not be annoying:

While recovering from pneumonia following a boating accident, he wrote 'Montana,' a play about the West, and toured the country starring in it for three years.
He wrote and directed some of his silent films.
He starred in the first feature film directed by John Ford.
Shortly after he finished paying off the mortgage, his ranch was wiped out by a flood when the St. Francis Dam collapsed (March 12, 1928).
John Wayne called him 'the greatest Western actor of all time' and Will Rogers called him 'the most human and natural of the Western actors.'
