Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of music school.
He was a one-hit wonder.
Although he wrote more than 15 operas, ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ is the only one still regularly performed.
When people started calling him ‘the next Verdi,’ George Bernard Shaw wrote a long, bitchy article saying he wasn’t.
Giacomo Puccini found his wife obnoxious.
He became the official composer of Fascist Italy.
He had big hair.

Why he might not be annoying:

His mother died when he was a little boy.
His father wanted him to be a lawyer, and he had to study music secretly.
He was poor for a long time, and had to live on one plate of pasta per day.
‘Cavelleria Rusticana’ was an overnight success.
It was such a hit that people were said to have ‘Mascagnitis.’
The opera is still very popular today.
