    She graduated Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Hawaii.
    She became a naturalized U.S. citizen the same year Hawaii became a state (1959).
    She was the first person born in Japan, and the first Asian-American female, to be elected to the United States Senate.
    During a highly polarized election cycle, she was notably endorsed by long-time Republican Representative Don Young of Alaska.
