He had his first hit ('Gimme Some Lovin') when he was 17.
He contracted peritonitis in the early 1970s and had to take a break from touring.
On his solo albums, he often played all the instruments.
His singing has been compared to Ray Charles.
Unlike his contemporaries, he has not burned out on drugs.
He has aged very well.
