His athletic director contract was not renewed in a highly publicized power battle with George University's president (2003).
He supported Jeb Bush but publicly endorsed Donald Trump for President at a campaign rally (2016).

    He's a Georgia icon.
He has been married for sixty years.
He served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.
    He mentored Herschel Walker.
He received a bachelor's degree (1954) and a Master's in history (1963) from Auburn University.
He turned down higher-salaried offers from the NFL to stay with the Bulldogs (he stayed faculty for over fifty years).
He was recognized as college football's 'Coach of the Year' by several organizations, including the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
He published two children's books and a book on gardening.
He secured three Olympic events for the Athens campus in 1996 (women's soccer, gymnastics, and volleyball) as a co-organizer.
