Location
    (December 21, 1620- )
Founded by English separatists, a.k.a. Pilgrims
    Population: 57,901 (2007 estimate)
Major attractions are Plymouth Rock, Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower II
Plymouth gets all the press, but Jamestown, Virginia, beat it by 13 years as the first successful English colony in America.
The Pilgrims were heading for the mouth of the Hudson River in New York but wound up off course.
There is no evidence the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock.
Plymouth Rock broke in two during an attempt to move it (1774).
For several years, the colony was placed under communal rule, with settlers forced to surrender their private supplies for the general welfare. (That's right: The Pilgrims were damn Commies!)
The Pilgrims stayed in Plymouth rather than continue south partly because they were out of booze. (The Mayflower log noted, 'Victuals most spent, especially our beer.')
After landing in Plymouth, the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact, the first written set of laws in colonial America.
It was the site of the first Thanksgiving (1621).
